Để đảm bảo mẫu tôm không nhiễm SHIV và các mầm bệnh nguy hiểm khác, người nuôi có thể gửi mẫu đến các phòng thí nghiệm để xét nghiệm, hiện nay bệnh SHIV có thể xét nghiệm bằng phương pháp Nested PCR hoặc qPCR.
Trong quá trình nuôi cần quan sát tập tính và màu sắc của tôm để kịp thời phát hiện. Kiểm soát nguồn nước và nguồn thức ăn, đặc biệt là thức ăn tươi sống như giun nhiều tơ. Xây dựng vành đai an toàn sinh học trại nuôi để hạn chế mầm bệnh xâm nhập từ môi trường bên ngoài, không cho người lạ vào trại nuôi, tiến hành khử trùng định kỳ. Theo dõi sát diễn biến của bệnh, thông tin từ cơ quan quản lý để có biện pháp ứng phó kịp thời.
