Giải thưởng Đổi mới Nuôi trồng Thủy sản toàn cầu hằng năm lần thứ 8, năm 2020 đã được trao cho nhà nghiên cứu sinh sau tiến sĩ Simão Zacarias (Trường Đại học Stirling) với đề tài nghiên cứu về tác động của việc cắt mắt tôm trong sản xuất tôm giống. Nghiên cứu của Zacarias tập trung vào vấn đề đang gây tranh cãi hiện nay trong các trại sản xuất tôm giống là việc cắt một bên mắt ở tôm mẹ trong quá trình sản xuất giống để đạt được sản lượng trứng cao hơn. Tuy nhiên, nghiên cứu của ông đã loại bỏ quan điểm cho rằng phương pháp cắt mắt sẽ giúp tăng sản lượng trứng đồng thời chỉ ra rằng hành động này có thể làm tăng nguy cơ mắc bệnh ở tôm giống, đặc biệt là việc cắt mắt tôm mẹ còn đang thu hút sự chú ý của những người ủng hộ quyền lợi động vật.
Zacarias đã chứng minh trong thử nghiệm tại phòng thí nghiệm (tại Honduras và Thái Lan) rằng ấu trùng và tôm con được sinh ra từ tôm thẻ chân trắng bố mẹ không cắt mắt cho tỷ lệ sống cao hơn khi tôm mắc hai loại bệnh chính gây nguy hiểm trên tôm thẻ chân trắng là bệnh Đốm trắng – White Spot Virus Disease (WSSV) và bệnh Hoại tử gan tụy cấp, còn gọi là bệnh chết sớm EMS – Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND). Đồng thời, ông cũng chứng minh rằng vẫn có thể đạt được tỷ lệ trứng tương tự mà không cần cắt mắt bằng cách cung cấp cho tôm bố mẹ thức ăn chất lượng cao, giàu dinh dưỡng ở giai đoạn trước thành thục. Đây là một sự thay thế hợp pháp cho phương pháp cắt bỏ cuống mắt.
Zacarias chia sẻ, giải thưởng danh giá này không chỉ là niềm vinh dự khi ông là người châu Phi đầu tiên đạt được, mà còn giúp mang đến thông điệp mạnh mẽ trong việc bảo vệ quyền lợi động vật đối với ngành tôm nói riêng cũng như ngành công nghiệp nuôi trồng thủy sản nói chung.
